HONG KONG: Game changing co-living brand Oootopia is breathing fresh air into the serviced residence sector in Hong Kong by allowing its residents to celebrate the “shared spirit” of living and discover a new way to live together in an energising, community-inspired atmosphere.

The company has already started rolling out a series of properties in Hong Kong. Oootopia Tai Kok Tsui in west Mong Kok will open May 2019 with 49 en-suite rooms, adding to Oootopia Kai Tak, a 56-en-suite room property which recently started welcoming guests in the lively neighbourhood of To Kwa Wan. The third quarter of this year will see its third property open near the University of Hong Kong for a total of over 150 en-suite rooms under the Oootopia brand.

Oootopia was jointly created by ARCH Capital and Wanderwonder Hospitality, which both share the same co-living vision of bringing together like-minded people in a spirit of inclusiveness and discovery. Led by its CEO Richard Yue, ARCH Capital is a Hong Kong-based regional real estate investment manager which has built over 29,000 homes across Asia. They have partnered with Singaporean firm Wanderwonder Hospitality, a team which formerly co-founded the largest hostel chain in Southeast Asia, with a portfolio size of over 1,000 beds, 140 apartment units and 50 hotel rooms.

Together, they are creating true co-living spaces, with the primary goal of putting humanity back into urban residential living, creating a genuine sense of belonging for residents through activities, experiences and programmes to promote togetherness and community.

“Co-living will be the driving force of Hong Kong’s future property market amid demand for affordable housing in the world’s most expensive city for real estate. Besides offering serviced residences, our emphasis is on social interaction and entrepreneurship among like-minded people,” Mr Yue said. “With the experience of Wanderwonder, we are confident of the successful roll-out of Oootopia in Hong Kong.”

“At Oootopia, we aim to bring opportunity, openness and originality – what we call the “three Os” – to the branded serviced residence sector. While we put a lot of effort into designing our spaces, community is our focus. We want to allow residents to share experiences and grow organically together. It is something greatly missing in the market,” said Lim Boon Cheow, CEO of Oootopia. “This is the dream and we want to make it a reality for our residents, who come from different walks of life and of all ages. Together they share our vision and our passion of an energising, positive and fully inclusive way of living. This is what co-living is all about.”

Oootopia Kai Tak features a cosy living room on the ground floor.

Relationships and friendships are already growing at Oootopia Kai Tak, as staff and residents join together to cook and celebrate birthdays and plan activities. The most recent was a visit to a home for the elderly in the area where they took local treats to their neighbours.

Chefs, fashion designers, bankers and start-up entrepreneurs are now amongst Oootopia’s residents. An alumni network has already been created through shared bonds and values, connected across borders through the Oootopia app, which offers activities, interactions and free-spirited fun. This will also become a place where Oootopians can meet up all over the world long after moving out, creating an online and offline community.

“We have our head in the clouds in one respect as we dare to dream. But our feet are also firmly on the ground in terms of a business model founded upon our fundamental values,” adds Boon. “The response to date has been very strong – particularly to the activities we organise such as art, photography and cooking – and we look forward to driving this forward across the region.”

Residences share a well-equipped kitchen.

The architect behind the three Oootopia projects is Groundwork Architects + Associates Hong Kong, specialists in stylish and sociable spaces in the city. The projects provide comfortable residential canvases with highly creative use of space. Units at Oootopia Kai Tak range from 110 to 208 square feet (sq ft). Residents share a well-equipped kitchen plus a cosy living room of over 1,500 sq ft on the ground floor. At Oootopia Tai Kok Tsui, spaces range from 97 to 160 sq ft. The design uses materials with natural tones in abundance so as to imbue a sense of homeliness, a touch of warmth and grounded-ness. The result is an intimate personal space for solace as well as a pleasant common area for residents to come together and share ideas and fun.

Oootopia Kai Tai recently started welcoming guests in the lively neighbourhood of To Kwa Wan.

Each room or suite is fully equipped with fast and free Wi-Fi and plenty of power outlets, along with home comforts such as mini-fridges, working desks and built-in wardrobes. Every resident is also provided with a welcome kit containing Oootopia-branded amenities.

Oootopia Kai Tak provides 56-en-suite rooms

The Oootopia app puts everything residents need at their fingertips, from accessing their room to making service requests, exploring local events and enjoying exclusive retail perks and F&B discounts. In addition, the group’s curated neighbourhood guide enables tenants to get together for special activities and outings. At the end of each busy day, Oootopians can unwind together in open-plan communal areas featuring games consoles.

Oootopia hopes to leverage the commercial strength of ARCH Capital and the creative spirit of Wanderwonder Hospitality to create more Oootopian communities and bring its unique living experience to more people.
